  1. What are organometallic compounds???

Metal complexes with at least one metal-carbon bond or any other metal- bond are referred to as organometallic compounds. These compounds have many physicochemical characteristics, such as chemical stability, and structural diversity. (Article #1)

  1. What are current organometallic compounds approved by the FDA for treating cancer??

Current organometallic compounds used in cancer treatment areNovel gold(I) and gold(III) NHC complexes, Caffeine-derived rhodium(I) NHC complexes, Ru(II)–arene complexes, New iron(II) cyclopentadienyl derivative complexes, Osmiun(II)–arene carbohydrate base anticancer compound, and Ester- and amide-functionalized imidazole of NHC complexes. (Article #2)

  1. Why are ferrocene derivatives or analogs needed??

Ferrocene and its derivatives have been a subject of sustained interest since their discovery in 1951. This is due, in part, to the stability of the iron(II) center and its aromaticity, as well as its usefulness in aqueous and aerobic media. The presence of the iron center is significant because it imparts unique physicochemical properties to the molecule. For example, the iron center can facilitate electron transfer reactions, which can be useful in applications such as catalysis and electronics. As a result, ferrocene has become a versatile organometallic framework for generating a range of functional derivatives that have a variety of applications in both medicinal and synthetic chemistry. (Article #3)

Why do you think having an iron center makes it important? (Kind of related to #4) -FIXED

  1. What advantages would these ferrocene molecules present to the metal-based drugs??

Ferrocene derivatives have been reported to exhibit antiproliferative activity against several cancer cell lines. Its complex also exhibits distinct oxidation-reduction behavior whereby it converts readily to its one-electron oxidation product, the ferricenium ion, a radical cation of eminent stability.  Its electron transfer and free radical reactions are useful in biological processes. Some of the important biological reactions of ferrocene analogues are ferricenium cation reduction by NADH and metalloproteins; enzymatically oxidation of ferrocene by hydrogen peroxide; recombination of the ferricenium system with an attack on free radicals leading to substituted ferrocene upon proton elimination. (Article #4)

  1. Why are we focusing on the investigation of well-known ferrocene standards in this research project??

One reason for focusing on the investigation of well-known ferrocene standards in this research project is that they are widely used as reference compounds in the analysis and characterization of new organometallic compounds. These reference compounds allow researchers to compare and validate the properties of new compounds against those of already established standards. Additionally, well-known ferrocene compounds can provide a basis for developing new applications or improving existing ones by enhancing our understanding of the fundamental properties of these compounds.

  1. What technique(s) do you recommend for investigating solubility of ferrocene analogs? What results do you expect to see??

The technique's that could be used are the labs that were done in week 3 and 4. Those labs examined solubility of compounds and separation.

  1. What technique(s) do you recommend for investigating the purity of ferrocene analogs? What results do you expect to see??

Both thin-layer chromatography (TLC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and melting point analysis are commonly used techniques to investigate the purity of ferrocene analogs.

TLC is a simple and low-cost technique that is useful for preliminary analysis of purity. In TLC, a small sample of the compound is spotted on a thin layer of stationary phase, which is typically silica gel. The sample is then allowed to separate on the plate by running a solvent through the stationary phase. The resulting TLC plate is then visualized under UV light or treated with a chemical reagent to visualize the separated components. The number of spots and their relative intensity can indicate the purity of the sample.

HPLC is a more sensitive and quantitative technique than TLC and is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. In HPLC, the sample is injected onto a column packed with a stationary phase, and the components are separated based on their differential interactions with the stationary phase and a mobile phase. The separated components are then detected and quantified by a detector. The resulting HPLC chromatogram can indicate the purity of the sample, with a single peak indicating a highly pure sample.

Melting point analysis is a simple and commonly used technique for evaluating the purity of solid compounds. It involves heating a small amount of the compound until it melts, and observing the temperature range over which the melting occurs. Impurities in a sample can lower the melting point and broaden the melting range. Comparing the observed melting point of a sample to the known melting point of the pure compound can provide an indication of the sample's purity.

Using these techniques in combination can provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the purity of ferrocene analogs, with TLC and HPLC providing qualitative and quantitative data, respectively, and melting point analysis providing a quick and simple confirmation of the purity.

  1. What technique(s) do you recommend for investigating the structure of the ferrocene analogs? What results do you expect to see??

The structure of ferrocene analogs can be tested with instrumentation using spectroscopy, H-NMR, UV-VIS, and MS.

  1. In what ways do ferrocene compounds have socioeconomic relevance??

Ferrocene compounds have several socioeconomic relevances. One of the most significant applications of ferrocene derivatives is in the field of catalysis. Ferrocene-based catalysts have been used in a variety of chemical reactions, including organic synthesis, polymerization, and fuel production. These catalysts are efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly, making them highly attractive for industrial applications.

Ferrocene derivatives also have applications in the field of medicine. Some ferrocene-based drugs have been shown to have anticancer, antiviral, and antimicrobial activities, and are being investigated for use in the treatment of various diseases. Additionally, ferrocene compounds have been used as imaging agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is an important diagnostic tool in the medical field.
