Review your report after you upload it to make sure that it looks the way you want it to look.
Items expected in your report:
- A header must be included with your name, your lab partner's name, the date the experiment was performed, and a lab title.
- It should give a brief description of the importance of the experiment and procedures. Essentially this is an objective. What was the point of the experiment?
- It should include any changes to the procedure not included in the lab notebook. Otherwise, students must write "Procedures followed as written in the lab notebook."
- It should include any tables and graphs (appropriately labeled) and a one-sentence description of what the figure is showing.
- It should include a brief analysis of the results. The analysis should describe any trends exhibited in the data, what the data shows/indicates/proves, and anything you find noteworthy to the experiment performed.
- It should include typed sample calculations for the results. Photos of hand-written calculations are NOT ACCEPTABLE.
- It should include the discussion questions for each experiment. The answers are required but do not add the actual discussion questions. Answer all parts of the questions in complete sentences and paragraph form. NO bulleting or numbering is acceptable.
Formatting expected in your report:
- The header should be on the top left corner of the first page of the report.
- All tables must be labeled ABOVE the table. Under each table, provide a one-sentence description of what the table is showing the reader.
- Any figure or graph must be labeled UNDER the figure or graph. Following the figure/graph label, provide a one-sentence description of what it is showing the reader.
- Analysis should be a separately labeled section.
- You must use either 12-point Times New Roman font or 11-point Arial font.
- You must double-space.
- The text of the report must be justified.
- Standard 1-inch margins.
- Must be writing in the third person (i.e., no I, you, we, etc.) and past tense.
- Everything must be typed in complete sentences and paragraph form. Bulleting or numbering is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Academic honesty is important. Remember:
- Everything you write should be your own original work.
- Do not copy another student’s lab report.
- Do not copy a lab report that you wrote during a previous semester.
- Do not copy information from the Internet, the lab procedure, or another source.
- Changing a few words from a source is still copying.
It is easy for your lab instructor to detect plagiarism. We do not grade plagiarized assignments. In addition, the Dean of Students requires any student committing plagiarism to complete an online review of academic honesty. The Dean of Students will put a hold on a student's account until that online review is completed.
Your lab instructor will grade your report and post your grade before your next lab report is due.
