For this assignment I want you to find an article form the recent literature that describes a new method or application of a spectroscopic technique. The technique could be any of the ones that we covered in the spectroscopy section of the course, UV/Vis absorbance, IR, laser induced fluorescence, Raman , or NMR spectroscopy. Note that there will be a second spectroscopy assignment where you can select a different form of spectroscopy to explore.
Finding an author
Instead of making you search through the literature for articles that may or may not be suitable, I would like you to find a scientist from any of the Power ListsLinks to an external site. published by The Analytical Scientist. This is a magazine that surveys analytical chemists and creates what is sort of a popularity list each year, however all the scientists on these lists are excellent analytical chemists and you should be able to find someone doing work with a suitable technique.
Once you find your scientist you will need to search through their published work to find an article to review. Try to find a more recent article (2020-2023) if possible. You may need to do a bit of digging to find their publications, the best literature search engine for analytical chemistry is SCOPUS, but you may be able top find a professional web page for the scientists, or find them on Google ScholarLinks to an external site.. Note that you may need to be on campus, or running a VPN to get access to SCOPUS and most journal articles.
When first looking for an article don't read the whole thing from front to back. There's a simple pattern to follow to quickly read a scientific paper to determine if it is useful to you or not described by Dr. Pete Carr. from the University of Minnesota's Chemistry Department.
Assignment description:
For the assignment I want you to read the paper and understand what innovation the authors have made to analytical chemistry either in the instrument, the technique, or the application.
In the discussion below summarize the article and focus on what the innovation was and how that innovation was achieved. The total summary should be a couple of paragraphs long.
Be sure to clearly include the following clearly before you start your summary:
- The scientist that you selected
- The spectroscopic technique being advanced/applied
- The title of the article,
- The DOI link to the paper
