Overview
Element “All-Star Cards”
The 118 known elements here on Earth (some of which are even found within other planets) are represented within the Periodic Table. The Periodic Table of Elements is one of the most important tools used by scientists to summarize information about each of the 118 elements, as it shows the relationships between the elements, and important information (statistics, or “stats”) about the individual elements: similar to a “Rookie” or “All-Star” card for sports athletes.
In this assignment, you are tasked with choosing any of the 118 elements (EXCEPT Hydrogen) from the periodic table (www.ptable.com) and creating an “All-Star Card” which explains important facts (statistics) concerning your chosen element.
Your “All-Star Card” must include information regarding specific elemental characteristics (statistics). Although additional information (even if presented with fiction and creativity) is always accepted, these “statistics” are required:
- Name of the element
- Image of the element drawn/illustrated in a sports pose of your choosing (for example: basketball, fútbol/soccer, American football, rugby, baseball, etc.)
- Number of each of the subatomic particles the element has (protons, neutrons, electrons)
- Atomic number
- Atomic weight
- Year discovered
- Scientist(s) who discovered the element
- Practical (real-world) uses of the element (minimum: 2)
- Historical/scientific summary of the element (written in the tone of a “biography” about the element)
Creativity is a bonus for the execution of this assignment, however, scientific accuracy is of the utmost importance! The following template and websites are excellent tools to aid you in creating an original, creative, fun, and scientifically accurate masterpiece!
