Overview
The number of waters of hydration in a copper containing compound can be determined using an absorbance method. In this method, the density and absorbance of an aqueous solution of the copper compound needs to be determined. The density is used to calculate the volume of the aqueous solution. If a calibration curve for the determination of Cu2+ is plotted, then the amount (mol) of copper salt (e.g. CuSO4) in the solution can be determined using the calibration curve, and the absorbance and the volume of solution values. The mass of “anhydrous” copper salt can be determined from the amount of the copper salt if the molar mass is known. The difference between the initial mass and the mass of the “anhydrous” copper salt is the mass of H2O in the hydrated salt. The ratio of the amount of water to the amount of “anhydrous” copper salt will be equal to the amount of waters of hydration in the hydrated salt. The salts used in this part of the experiment are copper sulphate, CuSO4•xH2O, and copper chloride, CuCl2•xH2O.
