Real World Application: What's that Smell?!??!
You’ve decided to get additional academic support for your Chemistry course by attending an in-person tutorial session on the content that you’ve been learning online. Upon entering the classroom for your session, you notice that the only seat available is adjacent to another student who seems to be sweating profusely, holding their stomach in a hunched over position, and grumbling in pain. You reluctantly take your seat, and begin to listen to the seminar’s presenter on the “Kinetic Molecular Theory of Matter,” and the behavior of gas particles. When suddenly, you smell something absolutely AWFULLY ABHORRENT come from the area where the student who was seemingly in great pain was sitting! You jump out of your seat in disgust, yelling to the front of the classroom that something is terribly wrong in the rear of the classroom!! A few other students who were near you also ran to the front, however, the students and teacher who were already in the front of the classroom are seemingly confused about your behavior and question what is wrong. The teacher then demands that you return to your seat in the rear of the classroom, but, you are afraid of the smell that may still linger.
For this assignment, you are tasked with creating a written or illustrative (drawing, comic, or diagramed) defense as to why you should not go back to the rear of the classroom near the student who released the unpleasant flatulence (intestinal gas)! You can use the online Sumo Paint App.
* Within your written or illustrated response, you must use the following vocabulary words, in the correct scientific context, to explain why it is more ideal for you to stay at the front of the classroom, and why the teacher hasn’t necessarily smelled the odor as of yet: molecules, gas, kinetic energy, pressure, diffusion, and concentration.
