CHEM101 Science versus Pseudoscience

Directions

Watch the following video to see what articles you will seek for your discussion post.

Peer review in Three Minutes

Do some research to see what distinguishes real science from pseudoscience.  Review the following links:

Scientific America: What is a Pseudoscience

Quackwatch: Distinguishing Science and Pseudoscience

Pseudoscience: What is it and how do I recognize it.

What's the difference between science and pseudoscience.

  • Once you are comfortable telling them apart, identify a claim or idea you've come across in your daily life that is presented as "science" but can now be identified as pseudoscience. Make your idea or claim the name of your post. Clearly describe the claim or idea for classmates who may not be familiar with it.  Then, carefully explain why it does not qualify as true science and must instead be classified as pseudoscience.  Respond to at least two of your classmates' posts, remembering to follow the netiquette rules (you may disagree, but do so respectfully!).

An additional rule for this discussion assignment is that you may not choose the same idea or claim as a classmate!  Therefore, it is to your advantage to post early to avoid having to find a new example to use!

  • Attached are directions and a rubric for the discussion posts. Make sure you read it. The highest grade that you will be able to get is a zero if your post does not include an academic source and have in text citations and a reference. Use APA citations. A file of how to do this is included in Content in Brightspace.
