Attached are four documents: (1) directions for how to write the experimental paragraph and results/discussion section of a lab report; (2) experimental paragraph rubric; (3) the lab handout for lab 6: determination of eact for an sn1 reaction in different solvents; and (4) example lab report which is a rough draft example from several years ago. Note that it's not a perfect example, but it at least gives you some idea how the results and discussion section should look. (there were some sections that can be improved, as this was the rough draft so this student had not fully corrected everything).
This is the procedure I wrote down in my lab notebook during lab that we followed:
The procedure we used:
Room Temperature Experiment:
1. Add 2mL of .003 M NaOH into clean 4-dram vial
2. Add 3-4 drops of bromothymol blue indicator sol. into same vial
3. Add 2mL of .06 M 2-chloro-2-methyl-propane in acetone LAST to vial
4. Gently swirl to mix thoroughly
5. Record time it takes for blue to turn yellow-green
6. Repeat steps 1-5 two more times
High Temperature Experiment:
1. Prepare water bath (warm), 7-10℃ using hot plate
2. Prewarm same sol. Used in room temp trials
3. Repeat same steps as room temp experiment but keep vial in warm bath during rxn
4. Record temp time
5. Repeat 2 more times
Low Temperature Experiment:
1. Add 2mL of prechilled .003 M NaOH to vial
2. Add 3-4 drops of indicator to same vial
3. Place this in ice bath to prechill
4. Add 2mL of .120 M 2-chloro-2-methyl-propane into vial once vial has reached 0℃ and place in ice bath
5. Periodically swirl
6. Record time it takes to change color and temp
7. Keep vial in bath during kinetics experiment to maintain constant temp
8. Repeat twice
Second Set of Kinetics Runs to Determine Solvent Effect:
1. Repeat room temp experiment using 2:1 acetone-water solvent instead of 1:1
2. Double vol. of .06 M 2-chloro-2-methyl-propane
3. Compare rxn rates of 1:1 and 2:1
Please write me an experimental paragraph and the results/discussion section of a lab report for this particular lab.
