This assignment will provide you with an opportunity to gain a deeper context regarding the concepts of cis and trans isomers, ring conformations, how to translate bond line structures into cyclohexane chair conformations, and Newman Projections. We will use myo-inositol as the molecule.
Myo-Inositol is a polyol (a compound containing many OH groups) that serves as the structural basis for a number of secondary messengers in some kinds of cells.
Be sure to read the following before completing this discussion:
- Sections 4.9 - 4.13 in the textbook.
- Article - Impact of myo-inositol treatment in women with polycystic ovary syndrome in assisted reproductive technologiesLinks to an external site.
Instructions
This assignment will be completed in two parts. Complete the following:
Part 1
Conduct your own online research, then explain the following:
- Explain how myo-inositol is important for human function and health.
- Minimum 250 words.
- Cite a minimum of two research publications.
- Explain how myo-inositol is different from D-chiro-inositol.
- Minimum 250 words.
- Cite a minimum of two research publications.
Refer to the article Impact of myo-inositol treatment in women with polycystic ovary syndrome in assisted reproductive technologies.
- Identify the mechanism of action of myo‑inositol
- Note: For the items above, you must use APA Citation FormattingLinks to an external site..
Part 2
For Part 2 you will draw the following:
- Draw the less stable chair conformation of myo-inositol clearly indicating the axial and equatorial substituents as well as the cis and trans relationships of at least 3 OH groups.
- Draw a viable Newman Projection using any carbon carbon bond clearly showing a gauche interaction between the substituents.
You have two options for submitting your drawings for Part 2:
- Option 1:
- Hand draw on a piece of paper.
- Take a picture of each drawing.
- Submit pictures along with Part 1.
- Option 2:
- Use a photo editing software of your choice to digitally draw your pictures. (Pixlr.comLinks to an external site. is a great free option for this)
- Submit picture files along with Part 1.
