Activity 4: Affordable Care Act

Review

The Affordable Care Act includes a number of provisions, including the following:

  • subsidies to help low-income citizens pay for insurance
  • an individual mandate requiring everyone to have health insurance
  • a requirement that all health insurance policies cover basic services
  • a provision allowing children to remain on their parents’ insurance until age 26
  • a rule that insurance companies cannot deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions

Questions

  • Which of these issues concern you the most? The least?
  • As of this writing, the individual mandate requiring everyone to have coverage is not being enforced. What are the pros and cons of an individual mandate, as you see them?
