As this week’s readings emphasize, summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting are essential techniques for working with sources in academic writing. Mastering these techniques will not only help you avoid plagiarism but also generate stronger writing for research papers and many other kinds of writing.
For this concept worksheet, return to any discussion from a previous week in this class and find 2 posts from other learners that you admire or appreciate. Feel free to choose posts from a couple different past discussions.
In a document, provide the following:
- The original post, followed by a full APA reference for the post. (See the tip below for how to do this.)
- A short paragraph about the post that includes a summary, paraphrase, and quotation of the original.
Repeat the above for the 2nd post you chose.
Finally, write a paragraph evaluating the process of creating your summaries, paraphrases, and quotations.
- Which is one of these is easiest for you? Why?
- Which is most challenging? Why?
- Which of these techniques do you think you’ll use most frequently in your Persuasive Research Paper for this class?
Tips for this assignment:
- APA in-text citationsLinks to an external site. are always required for summaries, paraphrases, and quotations in formal writing. Next week we will study these in detail. This week, do your best to use correct APA in-text citations using the link above as a guide.
- Here’s how to create a full APA Reference for an online discussion post:
- Lastname, F. [username]. (Year, Month Date). Title of post [Online forum post]. Publisher. URL
- Post with no title should be titled Untitled post.
- For the publisher, use Nightingale College.
Optional: Get ahead! Receive specialized writing feedback by submitting your paper for review.

This is more formal and objective and in academic writing, you'll find that they use case studies and research findings for examples and extensive use of citations and references to inform or persuade the audience. In technical writing, this is intended primarily for professionals or experts in that subject to instruct, explain, and guide the reader by giving them complex information and converting that into clear, accurate, and thorough instructions. This is to an audience who is a non-specialist and can read the technical writing and understand what to do in each step while reading the document. Technical writing is not as formal as academic writing would be. It is still clear but there is no use of jargon and then the examples you would see the author use in technical writing is more real-world scenarios and step-by-step instructions.
- I think nursing learners study and practice academic writing because since this style of writing focuses more on research, analysis, and critical thinking , which these are all skills that are important for us to become a nurse. Once we actively practice this type of writing and continue exercising our minds with it, the way we think and analyze certain scenarios might benefit us when we become nurses and are faced with a situation where we have to critically think and know how to move forward. Another reason why I think nursing learners study and practice academic writing because within the medical field and nursing in particular, academic writing can be a way nurses engage with each other in educational conversations and learn more from each other in an educational environment and this can bring up a lot of advanced academic conversations and it will be a learning point for everyone.
- The parts of academic writing I enjoy is the research aspect of it and the intent of educating other people with my paper. I enjoy the researching part because when I do more research on a specific topic or subjective, it leads me to know and learn a lot of new information and on top of that, there's a high chance I can stumble upon things I never knew before and just learning new information through research, whether it be related to my topic or not, is always exciting. I also like the feeling of learning new information and being able to educate others with it because it's satisfying to know you taught someone something that might be able to help them in the future or tell more people about. The part I dislike about writing academic papers is the formality of it and the complex and specialized language that we have to use. While I totally understand the reason behind why it's structured the way it is, for me having to write in such a professional and formal way is something I am not used to. It takes me a little bit more time to write it in a professional and educated way and not just in a way that seems like I'm having an informal conversation with one of my peers. Academic writing communicates the outcome of an individual's research illustrating their knowledge, focusing on a main regimen or a particular line of work, must be to the point, convey information, and is directed to a specific audience, is goal is to persuade an audience in a specific line of work, has purpose, and uses tone to do so. I believe that the most important differences in academic writing and technical/professional writing are that academic writing main goal is to expand knowledge, and technical/professional writing main goal is to resolve obstacles we can encounter in our line of work, school, or every day life situations. As a nurse, learning academic writing is crucial because in the nursing field we must constantly chart and make nurses notes to inform the provider of the progress and health. Nurses must also teach and expand the knowledge of the patient, family members and staff, so one must posses the correct writing skills in order to be able to convey information in a clear and efficient way. Our documentation must aim to improve communication between family members, staff, and other health care professionals. I like that in academic writing we can express our ideas to the audience, can make use of a level of formality. I can create an introduction that grabs the attention of the audience, it can be a question or just something that a lot of people may not know, I can add tone, writing in third person and not in first-person and add focus to my research. The parts I dislike are the grammar and structure. I can often lose an audience just by ranting or losing focus on the topic, and even add too much unnecessary information that can distract the attention of the overall focus of the writing itself, and one can lose credibility if we make careless grammatical mistakes. (Frederick 2015) states, “It is difficult to measure how grammar should be instructed due to the many variables that can distract you and affect language studies.” Reference Frederick, N., (Jan 2015) The Professional Importance of Grammar and How it Should be Taught.
