Difficult Conversations

Overview

You have received a bunch of complaints about a member of your team, Joseph, smelling like body odor. You have noticed that by lunchtime, the smell seems to get stronger. He has talked recently about switching deodorants to a more natural version. You know this is a sensitive situation that is going to require a difficult conversation.

Using the steps outlined by Mel Robbins in the How to Have Difficult Conversations video, describe how you would approach this situation. Then, ask a friend or family member to play Joseph’s part and practice the conversation.

For this discussion, complete the following steps:

  1. Share your written approach to the difficult conversation.
  2. Answer the following questions about the practice conversation:
    1. How did you feel having this conversation with your friend or family member?
    2. Did preparing for the conversation beforehand using the four steps outlined by Mel Robbins help? Why or why not?
    3. Draw from personal or professional experiences and use them as examples to support your position. If you are using internet sources, please include a link to the source in your response.
