Course Project Overview
Course Project: The Future of Union
The purpose of this project is to apply your critical thinking skills about the future of unions. An important aspect of putting this paper together is to share your professional understanding related to labor relations and unions based on theory. Include the theories from the discussions, your readings, and the TCOs reviewed throughout the course in this paper. Throughout the course, we will cover the historical development of unions, looking at how unions were formed and some of the critical reasons that unions became a reality in the business world, management needed to find ways to respond to the onset of unions coming into the landscape of their organizations. One of the ways management responded was to find a way to build relationships with their union employees. A key component in doing this was to establish labor relations. The business landscape has changed since the onset of unions in the late 18th century. Much of the focus of unions has changed from initially needing to protect workers and provide a safe place to work, to negotiating wages and benefits through collective bargaining. Organizations today have looked at their bottom line and made a number of business decisions that affect unions differently. Some organizations decided that having a union is cost-prohibitive and as a result, have closed operations and move to states that promote a non-union environment. There are a number of examples recently that have also shaped the union management landscape. You may recall the protesters that swarm the Wisconsin State Capitol in 2011 to oppose the governor's decision to strip away union workers benefits. Other states have taken steps to reduce or do away with public sector bargaining rights. In the sports world, there have been recent lockouts in the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, and the National Hockey League. Teacher unions have been scrutinized recently as well. In Chicago, teachers went on strike because of their concerns over an unfavorable labor contract. The strike was settled, but the Chicago Public School Board ended up closing 50 plus schools. You may also recall that Hostess, the producer of Twinkies, as well as a number of other baked goods, went bankrupt after an acrimonious fight with its unionized workers. Bring your human resource focus to thinking about how to address the topic. This might include, how can HR impact some of the issues that labor and management are dealing with? How can HR be seen as an advocate for employees and management? How do the terminal course objectives support some of the paper? How do the theories in the course help your perspectives on the topic you choose? Finally, remember to follow the rubric from the course project. You will discover that the labor movement still plays a vital role in our national and worldwide economies. Now, to proceed with how to prepare for writing your paper, first, look at the course project paper topic section to choose among the topics for writing the course paper. Then read the guidelines to find out the assignment criteria such as, how many pages to write, the number of scholarly resources to include, the type of font to use, etc, and turn in the final paper in Week 7. The grading rubric explains how to receive full points on various components, such as documentation and formatting, organization and cohesiveness, editing and content. The final step involves submitting your paper to the Dropbox. Good luck to you on a successful paper.
Course Project Topic:
Consider a specific union, such as the United Auto Workers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Teamsters, National Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, Airline Pilots Association, college basketball players, coffee barista's and so forth, and discuss their viability in the future. Find one that is interesting to you.
What should this specific union focus on to remain in the business world?
What changes are needed for unions to maintain support from their membership, the community, and the employers?
Are Labor unions experiencing a decline or rise, in membership? What factors did we learn from our book support your position?
Now, find an article/case about a company that falls under the specific union you chose.
Summarize it and then answer the following questions pertaining to your chosen article:
Explain whether the company from your chosen article dealt with: collective bargaining, impasses, strikes or dispute resolutions. Define them per our book! Use the facts from the article to explain what they are.
Explain if there were any contract clauses discussed in the article chosen and what the employee/union/management rights and obligations were in the article you chose. Use concepts from our book that we learned!
Explain what globalization is and how it applies to labor relations, per our book. Did it apply to the specific article you chose? If not, might it?
How might non-union and union workplaces settle dispute resolutions.
What labor laws, that we learned this session, might apply to the chosen article? (Think in terms of the National Labor Relations Act.). Use the facts of your chosen article to explain the laws and how you think the case should be decided.
Provide a conclusion and a reference page.
