Overview
THESE ARE TWO DIFFERENT ASSIGNMENTS
Here's the text:
Johnson, C. E., & Hackman, M. Z.. (2018).
Leadership: A communication perspective.
Waveland. Abbreviated J&H in syllabus
Thurman, H. (1979).
With head and heart: The autobiography of Howard Thurman. Harcourt Brace & Company.
Leadership Interview Analysis (150 points) Identify someone you know who is in a leadership position (a managerial position will work fine for our purposes). This person could be an academic administrator, a pastor, a supervisor, a coach, or anyone who is in what you could frame as a leadership role in the marketplace/business or non-profit/not-for-profit, community, public service, armed services, or government context. Select at least six chapters from the Johnson and Hackman book and use concepts/ideas/themes from those chapters to inform your questions. Based on what this person tells you, write about this person as a leader using terms from the chapter to inform your work. (Think of how we've been examining the leadership of Howard Thurman throughout the semester as a general guide.) You are also welcome to incorporate material from the Thurman book as may be appropriate. Expected length: Three to seven double spaced pages; grades will correspond to length and quality of content (see criteria for discussion posts).
Leadership Portfolio (200 points) You will be completing various self-assessment materials in the main text (J&H). Study those analyses to gain insight about yourself as a leader. Refer to those self-analysis results as specifically as you can to assess yourself as a leader, highlighting key principles from the chapter that are relevant. Include in this analysis any leadership experiences that you have had thus far in your life, reflecting on your experiences through the lens of the chapter materials and your self-assessment. Expected length: Five to 10 double spaced pages; grades will correspond to length and content (see criteria for discussion posts)
