Overview
Directions for Chapter Four (/Five)
Minimum length: Chapter 4 must be long enough to adequately present your results, findings, analysis, and observations for your master's thesis, and must be of a length acceptable to satisfy the faculty members on your thesis committee. This chapter will likely be longer for qualitative theses than for quantitative theses.
Directions
You must submit your Chapter 4, plus your reference list section, and your title page. Your Chapter 4 must be written in APA style and format, double-spaced, and set in 12 point type.
Chapter 4 is the Results / Findings / Analysis chapter that contain your presentation and analysis of your data for your thesis.
How this chapter is written will depend somewhat on whether you are using quantitative methodology or qualitative methodology for your thesis. In Chapter 4, you should:
(1) Present the data resulting from the research you have done for your thesis after you have carried out the methodology you determined for your thesis in your methodology chapter (Chapter 3), and state your findings (what the data and research indicates/shows).
For theses using qualitative research, this chapter would be where you present a written account of your actual implementation of your methodology and your process of analysis and state your observations and analysis regarding your artifact(s), text, interviews, etc., and include the results and findings drawn from your analysis.
For theses using quantitative research, you should first state the results of your survey, etc., without interpretation, as being the "results" from administering and statistically processing your research instrument (your survey, etc.) Then state your "findings" based on what the results indicate as you interpret, honestly and accurately, the results from your survey, etc., for your thesis. You should present the statistical information adequately and clearly so the reader can see if your methodology, the administering of your research instrument, the statistical processing, and your analysis and interpretation of the findings was done properly and correctly.
(2) Clearly state and explain how your research completed for your thesis addresses and answers your research question for your thesis. Support and defend your reasoning. Also, state whether or not each of your hypotheses was proved to be true or disproved. Explain how we know this from the research you have completed for your thesis.
(3) At the end of the chapter, include a chapter summary paragraph and close with a paragraph of transition to the next chapter.
nb. Some committees will prefer you divide Results and Discussion into separate chapters.
Reference List Section In the reference list of your chapter, you must list the sources you have referred to in your chapter. If you refer to a source in your chapter, then that source must be included in your reference list. Your reference list should be written in APA style.
