Overview
Compare and Contrast Article/Report
Instructional Media: Tools and Resources
·You will provide either an article or report, and/or a different resource which will be attached and linked to your written report. The topic of your chosen article should be approved by your instructor beforehand. The written report will focus on understanding arguments and knowing how to compare and contrast an argumentative essay. The report will be written by a small group of max 4 students, and it should include 2 arguments for and 2 arguments against. Please follow the rubric below. For additional resources, please search online (i.e. google scholar, ORG/UN/UNICEF, and Saudi Vision 2030).
Requirements
1. The report must use your own language. Do not cut and paste sentences from the two essays and place them in your report. Reword sentences. If you do cut and paste a sentence you must use quotation marks and write the author, year, and page number in brackets in the text after the quotation (see examples of citing references under “Useful Resources”).
2. Each paragraph should start with a topic sentence that introduces the paragraph idea.
3. The report must:
- have a cover page
- use Times New Romans or Arial, font size: 12
- have a space of 1.5 between lines,
- be 3 full pages in length (not including the reference list)
- start each paragraph with a topic sentence
- be written in the third person (do not use “I” or “my” or “our” or “we”)
- use full sentences (and no bullet points)
4. The report must use the following headings:
Introduction
Introduce the issue and its importance, state your initial overall opinion of both essay’s arguments (for and against), say what your report will cover
Arguments against
For each of the 2 reasons identify – the reason, fallacies, argument type (by analogy or authority or example), assumptions, and counterexamples (alternative explanations which oppose the reason). Use a separate paragraph when analyzing each reason.
Arguments for
For each of the 2 reasons identify – the reason, fallacies, argument type (by analogy or authority or example), assumptions, and counterexamples (alternative explanations which oppose the reason). Use a separate paragraph when analyzing each reason. Please find fallacies material in chapter 6 in Becoming a Critical Thinker by Sherry Diestler and further in chapter 4 Attacking Faulty Reasoning by T. Edward Damer.
Comparison and Contrast between two arguments
Compare the similarities of the argument types and the fallacies in two arguments. Other similarities? Justify your answer with examples.
Conclusion
Restate the issue, summarize the strength of the arguments in the essays, and give your opinion about which essay is the strongest with supporting reasons.
Create a comparison table with and against
