Once a target behavior has been pinpointed by conducting appropriate indirect assessments, you can begin to gather the data necessary to quantify this behavior. Observing the client's behavior is referred to as direct assessment. This direct observation of the individual's behavior provides data on the individual's actual performance. The first step of the direct assessment is to gather baseline data on the target behavior. This allows us to determine whether treatment is necessary, based on the rate at which the behavior is exhibited. It also allows us to determine the effectiveness of the intervention after it is in place. For this assignment, you will write an operational definition of Monica's behavior, gather baseline data, and graph that data.
Preparation
To prepare for this assignment, complete the following:
- Review the information on the "Monica's Case" tab in the Functional Behavior Assessment: Introduction and Monica's Case media piece.
- Access the Functional Behavior Assessment: Baseline Data media piece.
Instructions
For this assignment, complete the following:
- Go to the Functional Behavior Assessment: Baseline Data media piece and watch the video of Monica. Gather the baseline information from that video. You will count one instance of property destruction for each occurrence of the behavior.
- For your own reference of baseline data and collecting raw data, you may use the Baseline Data Collection Form [DOCX]. This word document will not be submitted with your assignment, but is a resource for you as you complete baseline observation, data collection, and graphing of the baseline data. Each time the target behavior of property destruction occurs during the video, place a tally in the column for the date of 4/14 during the time of 5 p.m.–5:05 pm.
- After watching the video, write a clear, operational definition of the target behavior in the text box on the Baseline Data tab. Be sure to include examples and nonexamples of the behavior.
- Use the Baseline and Functional Analysis Template [XLSX] to create a graph and plot all of the data you collected. Follow APA formatting for your graph. For more information about APA graphing requirements, search for information in Academic WriterLinks to an external site.. Include the following:
- Create a line graph that depicts gathered data.
- Provide an appropriate chart title for a graph.
- Include axes labels appropriate for a graph of identified data.
- Include a figure caption appropriate to the graph being developed.
- Record the frequency of a targeted behavior correctly.
To complete this assignment, copy and paste your operational definition from the media piece into the FBA Template you started last week and submit your graph and your template to the assignment area.
Competencies Measured
By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and scoring guide criteria:
- Competency 3: Apply assessment-based techniques to practice in ABA.
- Write an operational definition of the targeted behavior.
- Create a line graph that depicts gathered data.
- Provide an appropriate chart title for a graph.
- Include axes labels appropriate for a graph of identified data.
- Include a figure caption appropriate to the graph being developed.
