Reflection Q&A/identity iceberg/ inclusion

Weekly Reading (a): Read Ch6;

Weekly Chapter Reflection (b): You will write a 1-2 page comprehensive paper including the main points of the article in addition to your reflection based on real life experiences; The paper must be double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman with one-inch margins.

Weekly Chapter Q/A (c): In addition, please prepare one discussion question and answer regarding the concept dealt within that week’s chapter. It is kind of like a "Review Session" for each chapter we are studying. For this activity, you are expected to come up with ANY ONE DISCUSSION (Short-Answer) QUESTIONS as long as you think the concept is important and provide your answer for that question. Please make your questions a good (and interesting) question by bringing in a real-life example (from your work experience, or another service setting or Youtube video) by applying the knowledge we have learnt for that chapter.

INSTRUCTIONS

PART ONE SUMMARY [A-03] - see actual A-03 assignment for details, if needed/desired

1. Create a diagram that you are comfortable sharing that captures various aspects of who you are. Consider your background, places where you grew up or lived, skills, cultural norms you follow...

  • details provided in A-03.
  • It is okay to revise items you presented in A-03 based on feedback received. It is expected significantshortcomings of the A-03 submission (e.g., format, structure, traits) would be revised.

Elements are to show not only the themes above, but clarity and meaning is added by adjacencies, colors, and/or lines to make connections between items where they exist.

Why you are doing PART ONE ....

“traits, when taken together, form a large mosaic that provides insight into individuals…. personality variables … have a direct impact on work behavior … how we see ourselves … how we interact with others (OpenStax, p. 42)

PART TWO [A-08]

INSTRUCTIONS

Taking it seriously you will have to put some work into it. It is very likely you will need to rearrange what you did in part one, perhaps adding to it based on further reflection as well as incorporate the multiple new elements described below into a single coherent graphic. Submit the part two version of the assignment in pdf format. You must also submit the A-03 again for my reference in grading. A-03 and A-08 can appear in one pdf but must be clearly labeled with the assignment number. Use the assignment link in Blackboard to view the grading rubric and for submission.

2. Use some graphical means and a key (e.g., shapes, colors, arrangement) to identify items that:

  1. you have felt bias of others working against you. (consider insights learned in the LM from supplemental readings and videos on forms of bias). The diagram must indicate in some way the bias is towards you.. This may include how you may be perceived by others differently than how you think about yourself. (consider concepts in Chapter 3 on perceptions and job attitudes. Consider the video included in the PowerPoint in LM09 on Inclusion Begins with i)
  2. are a component of your identity (e.g., strong values) and may lead towards a form of bias from you towards others. (consider past readings on values, e.g., Chapter 2). The diagram must indicate what aspect(s) of your identity may result in bias towards others.

Thinking about bias towards you may not be pleasant. Similarly, realizing you may be the one to have conscious or unconscious bias towards others is humbling. It is humbling to admit this and put it on paper but doing so can be a powerful step in self-reflection that greatly helps you in your interactions with others in the future. Be sure to read the quote from our text at the bottom of this assignment on why it important. Think a bit about the 3 main points of that statement.

3. Add work and future career interests and connect traits, etc. that you may leverage to facilitate and forward those interests. (Highlight in some way how certain elements may pay a role in your career interest/career goal as facilitators or barriers. Some of these may be characteristics/traits you omitted when constructing Part 1 and need to be added now.) This is pulling a lot of information together about you. Doing it will bring thing about yourself into a sharper focus that you can use for self-development, considering how you interact with other and how they might perceive you.

Verify your work using the assignment rubric.

Please read this ---- IMPORTANT - Why you are doing PART TWO ...

"Self-Concept. Our self-concept (our behaviors, abilities and unique characteristics) represents a major influence on how we perceive others. This influence is manifested in several ways. First, when we understand ourselves (i.e., can accurately describe our own personal characteristics), we are better able to perceive others accurately. Second, when we accept ourselves (i.e., have a positive self-image), we are more likely to see favorable characteristics in others. Studies have shown that if we accept ourselves as we are, we broaden our view of others and are more likely to view people uncritically. Conversely, less secure people often find faults in others. Third, our own personal characteristics influence the characteristics we notice in others. For instance, people with authoritarian tendencies tend to view others in terms of power, whereas secure people tend to see others as warm rather than cold. From a management standpoint, these findings emphasize how important it is for administrators to understand themselves ..." (OpenStax, 2019, p.71)
