Overview

think about what makes an effective public speaker.

Task

In a minimum of 250 words, please write an initial post in which you

1. Identify a person who is an effective speaker and explain why are they effective.
2. Provide a link to one of their speeches and point to particular moments in the speech that demonstrate effectiveness.
3. Address how the chosen speaker uses different language strategies to enhance their communication effectiveness (see Concepts - Language Strategies, Concepts – Verbal, Vocal & Visual Elements, and Chapter 3), and, perhaps, how the language choices in your Unit 5 Outline might undermine your own effectiveness.
4. Address how the chosen speaker's language choices define and frame the situation in which they are speaking (see Concepts - Language Strategies, Concepts – Verbal, Vocal & Visual Elements, and Chapter 3).
5. Then, you should reflect on how you can adapt any of the speaker's strengths for your own presentation.
   1. What aspects of the speaker’s language and delivery as areas you would like to improve in your own speeches?
   2. What are a few ways you plan to apply these skills in your next speech, and why? - You may want to reflect on how and why you might need to revise your Unit 5 Outline before your Unit 6 Speech performance.

If you are having trouble coming up with a speaker, go to American Rhetoric which lists and provides the Top 100 speeches of the 20th Century, provides speech manuscripts (and some videos) of other important speeches of the 20th and 21st Centuries, and gives you access to many more speeches that you might use.
