Overview

This week Marge and Helen have decided to share detailed definitions of their own culture and discuss how it has affected their relationships. As they have learned, each of us exists within many cultures—ethnic, educational, geographic, organizational, social, religious, just to name a few. Their task will be to precisely describe the cultures within which they exist and write about a time they were aware of how those cultures influenced their relationships.

For your initial post this week, respond to one of the following prompts with no more than 6 sentences : AND response to 3 classmate with 2-3 senteses

  • What advice would you give Marge and Helen about how to proceed? How would you prompt Marge and Helen to recognize the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion in their cultural affiliations?
  • Describe an event or scenario where your own cultural background influenced your relationships with others whose worldviews differed from your own. Explain how this event or scenario demonstrates one or more aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Share a link to a scholarly article, video, or website that connects to a culture within which you exist and describe how your own culture influenced a relationship with someone whose worldview differed from your own. Share the link within your post. How has this article, video, or website impacted the way you think about diversity, equity, and inclusion in your academic, professional and/or personal life?
  • What about this week’s resources or concepts did you find most impacted the way you think about diversity, equity, and inclusion in your professional development and/or academic journey?

CLASSMATE #1 What about this week’s resources or concepts did you find most impacted the way you think about diversity, equity, and inclusion in your professional development and/or academic journey?

Diversity, equity and inclusion for every company should be part of their policy, its culture and seen as the way the company does business as it’s good practice for the bottom line. Professionally the downside of the job its causing for me some challenges, as its seen as overdone by the employer, due to the countless messaging, hours of mandatory DEI training. It can be taken as a forced company position and counterproductive to expressing your opinion freely.

CLASSMATE #2 For today's scholarly article or video, I have to give a little bit of background. My nationality make up is 25% Italian, 25% Lebanese, and the rest is "Mutt" Mostly English with a mixture of Dultch, Welsh, and German thrown into the mix. The town I grew up in is predominantly Italian American, and the culture we exist within is an interesting one all it's own.

This article, Understanding Italian American Cultural Norms provides an overview of the state of the Italian American culture, and what makes that culture stand out. Based on the article, Italian Americans retain their cultural heritage well over 3 generations. This would be 4 at this point considering that the article was written in 1987. Italians are proud of their culture, and continue the traditions established in the "old country".

For the second reference, I thought I'd include a funny video for you to watch about our culture. Uncle Louie is a National Treasure I thought we could all enjoy!!

CLASSMATE # 3 Marge and Helen have a great opportunity to better understand each other’s cultures and how these shape their relationships. They can start by reflecting on their own cultural identities, listening carefully to each other, and recognizing both differences and similarities in their experiences. By sharing personal examples and discussing diversity, equity, and inclusion, they can build empathy and work together more effectively. Creating a safe space for open conversation will help them strengthen their bond and contribute to a more inclusive environment.
