Overview
- Satisfy readers' desire for a well-planned text, with a fresh, engaging purpose and a deliberate organizational structure.
- Contain substantial material drawn from a minimum of six separate sources, purposefully selected and used.
- Employ strategies for paraphrase, summary, and quotation thoughtfully, thus avoiding any inadvertent plagiarism.
- Include in-text citations (also called parenthetical citations) throughout the draft, accounting for how source material has been included.
- Include a bibliographic list, either Works Cited (MLA) or References (APA), in generally correct form.
- Show cross-referencing between the in-text citations and the bibliographic list.
- Have appropriate formatting for readers' comfort - such as double spacing, indented paragraphs, a standard font, one-inch margins, and page numbers.
- Stretch to a comfortable length between 6 to 7 pages (2000-2500 words) of text, with an additional page for your Works Cited.
- In order to demonstrate the knowledge acquired through gathering information, the culminating assignment in a research project is the research essay. Whether you are exploring your topic or stating a claim, the research essay must be a minimum of 2500 words excluding the Works Cited page.
Since you have accumulated 6-8 sources of information by preparing an Evaluative Annotated Bibliography, a minimum of six (6) sources of information taken from your work must be used in supporting your inquiry or argument in writing the research essay.
There two organizational patterns for the research essay. Whether you decide on following Narrative or Argumentative Logic as described on pages 111-121 in your textbook, a fully developed essay is the goal for the First Draft and even your Final submission.
Since this is an Composition course, MLA Guidelines are the documentation format for your essay. MLA Guidelines are as follows:
Type your paper on a computer in an 8.5 x 11-inch document Double-space the text of your paper, and use a legible font (e.g. Times New Roman). Whatever font you choose, MLA recommends that the regular and italics type styles contrast enough that they are recognizable one from another. The font size should be 12 pt. Leave only one space after periods or other punctuation marks Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides Indent the first line of paragraphs one half-inch from the left margin Create a header that numbers all pages consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin Use italics throughout your essay for the titles of longer works (Books or Documentaries).MLA guidelines of author/page for in text citations and properly formatted Works Cited page.
