Step 2:
Having completed an individual log for each source, students will work independently to extrapolate and name what they understand as the commonplaces and issues existing across the authors/sources. Additionally, students will identify key terms (2-3 total) that reflect shared understandings based on their use by each source. In order to demonstrate this shared understanding, each source should be quoted OR accounted for in identifying each key term. If a key term does not appear to be shared across your perspectives, then the term itself becomes an issue (see Makau & Marty, 2001, p. 211). Only one of these logs (issues, commonplaces, key terms) is completed for the six sources gathered. This content will be typed into a Deliberation Log, Step #2 form.
Grading & Assessment of Deliberation Logs, Step #2:*
Generally, Deliberation Logs, Step #2 should demonstrate:
- logical and coherent correspondence among key terms, commonplaces, and issues;
- thoroughness in comprehending and considering the arguments of all sources;
- identification of multiple essential commonplaces and issues;
- key terms defined and supported by evidence from all sources – [2-3 total];
- APA (6th ed.) with formatted cover page, in-text citations, and reference list;
- use of six (6) sources relevant to course topic, and two are scholarly sources.
What to submit for Step #2:
- Each student will submit one (1) completed Deliberation Log, Step 2
