PART I: FINAL PAPER PROMPT
Assignment Description: (200 pts)
Throughout this semester we have discussed a variety of communication theories including, their main assumptions/principles, key authors as well as concepts, and application. The purpose of this assignment is to help you reflect back on your learning about communication theory for the semester.
For this paper, you should choose at least one theory that we have discussed in the class on which to do more in-depth research and use it to analyze a current issue/phenomenon. As the class is focused on learning communication theory, most of the time and thought of the paper should be spent demonstrating application of theory. You may choose to apply your theoretical arguments to a text, film, current event, social movement, song, video, news, podcast, social media, etc.
For this final paper, you may work individually or in partners. Please keep in mind that if you choose to work in partners (no more than 2 per group), you are completely responsible for managing your partnership and will earn the same grade. The paper should be 4-5 pages double-spaced (solo) or 8-10 double-spaced (group of 2 people) without references.
Your analysis of a chosen communication theory should clearly include the following parts:
- Origins: Provide a short summary of the origins of theory and/or historical background.
- Tenets/Core commitments: discuss at least 2 main assumptions and/or principles of the theory.
- Key authors: Provide at least one key figure/author and discuss their major contribution(s) to the theory.
- Illustrations: Provide a case study/application to illustrate how the theory explains a given phenomenon. You may choose a text, film, current event, social movement, song, video, news, podcast, social media, etc.
- Limitations and Recommendations: Discuss any limitation(s) of the theory and provide recommendations/suggestions for improvement.

- 12 pt. font, Times New Roman
- Paper must be submitted via Canvas on Tuesday, Dec 10 by 11: 59 pm
- For this assignment, you are required to reference to any course materials you cite in this paper. Therefore, if you refer directly to the reading material in this class, or any other reference, please use APA style and include a reference page.
