Week 2: Business Report Introduction

PRINT the below information to keep you on track... the course will continue to move quickly and I want you to successfully stay on track!

------------------------------

Welcome to Week 2!

First, I am impressed at how many of you complete Week 7 assignments last week along with the Week 1 materials. It is impressive to see and, while not required, working ahead will definitely help if anything unexpected occurs in the term. This week you will notice all modules/weeks are open. Feel free to continue to work ahead as time allows.

I have enjoyed watching your introductory presentations thus far and loved the community that is already happening in the discussions. I can tell this is going to be a fun term with you all and that we all will learn a lot from one another! Please remember all discussion videos and video assignments will need to be embedded to receive full points.

In the discussion I noticed that many of you are unfamiliar or had limited experience with LinkedIn, which is not a bad thing. You will not only learn about it this term but walk away with a great profile that you can keep improving as you gain additional experience and skills. The Employment Package is my favorite assignment for that reason. I know most of you are here to make money and gain employability skills, leading to better jobs and bigger promotions. My goal (and job!) is to support you in that process.

LinkedIn also holds a special place in heart, for lack of a better phrase. Studies show that 75-80% of the job market is hidden. That means before you even apply for an open position, they likely have someone in mind. Or are in the process of hiring them. My last three jobs have been as a result of someone reaching out to me, a passive candidate, because of my LinkedIn profile. As a hiring manager I always recruited from LinkedIn because the best hires are typically people who are not actively looking. Or someone that was a recommendation from my network to which I looked at their LinkedIn to see if they were a "fit".

Which leads me to a quick story. Many years ago, I was sitting at a coffee shop grading papers. I struck up a conversation with two gentleman next to me and we traded cards. One turned out to be the CEO of a major company in Detroit and the other the Vice President of Human Resources (VP of HR). That evening, after our coffee shop conversation, I connected with them on LinkedIn and sent a quick note letting them know I enjoyed our conversation. The next day the VP of HR messaged me back and said they needed someone with my experience and asked me if I would be willing to have a meeting. We never talked about my experience in our conversation at the coffee shop. He saw it on LinkedIn. After we met, they created a role for me. You read that right – they created a role for me! We will talk about negotiation this term. Life is really all about negotiation! So, imagine the spot creating a position for me put me in. You're right... it put me in a good position to negotiate what type of position I wanted and salary expectations! That is only one story. I have many more to share. Don’t dismiss the power of networking through LinkedIn.

WEEK 2: Business Report Introduction

This week we will be reading about business reports and proposals (Ch 12 & 13) and begin working on your major project, due in Week 6. Review the Week 2 Overview for more details.
