Overview

The goal is to combine: 1. copyright law, and 2. AI and the use of ChatGPT. The challenge here is to use ChatGPT to analyze and write about problem of copyright and AI. In this assignment we are concerned with AI as a research and learning agent and copyright law as a specific topic to be investigated and written about using AI.

First, review class lecture on using chat GPT to 1: "explain" copyright, 2: "write" about copyright 3: "brainstorm" solutions to this copyright "crisis."

Second, review the class lecture on copyright law.

Third, make copies of the results of the prompts and responses from ChatGPT, include them on the PDF you submit to the CANVAS page.

Then answer (one) of the following questions about copyright (you decide):

1. All of the work you have inputted and extracted from ChatGPT has been incorporated into ChatGPT’s data sets without your permission. Do you believe that ChatGPT using your work should be considered “fair use” according to copyright law?

2. Do you believe it is ethical for these large language models to use your work as their own? Do they have the right to own everything we have inputted, extracted, and created using AI and to profit from it?

3. Referring to the case: New York Times v. Microsoft and OpenAI, do you believe that OpenAI’s use of New York Times articles falls under “fair use”? Does it go against any of the six basic rights of copyright holders in the Copyright Act of 1976?

4. Is OpenAI's use of New York Times articles to train its AI systems considered an act of unauthorized reproduction?

What is the problem or issue, why is it important?

Give a concise overview of the problem or issue being addressed. This overview should be given as the introduction, the reader should be able to walk away and describe the problem and why it matters. Note that when describing the importance of the issue it may be a good place to tie in its intersection with media psychology. Keep the PEST factors in mind.

Describe what you have learned in your reading and from class lectures, and provide an analysis. This is where you will present what you have learned and give an analysis or explanation of what each finding means. Take into account PEST: political, economic, social, and technological factors. All may not always apply but thinking of and addressing the ones that do will help guide your analysis. By completing this section you should have laid out evidence for what your proposed policy solutions or recommendations are.

What are your solutions or recommendations based on your findings? Describe the pros and cons. It is required that you account for different interest groups or stakeholders that would want to get involved on either side of the issue. Lastly, it will be helpful to again keep the PEST factors in mind when summarizing.
