CLASSMATE POST:Hello Class,
A good leader is one that is an active listener. Listening plays a strategic role in communication when it comes to inclusion. The ability to listen and process information effectively is critical for leaders to succeed. Many of those seeking inclusion and belonging just want to be heard, and so leaders that are able to digest information from many different communication styles and then apply that information towards the betterment of their team is a good leader. The building of trust is delicate for a leader to pursue while also trying to remain an authoritative figure. In order to achieve this, empathy must be shown and mutual respect must be exchanged so that staff feels as though they can but their support behind you and trust you with their mistakes. Leveraging technologies to help facilitate inclusion amongst a workspace can also work to promote equality as well. Utilizing online platforms where all diverse voices can be heard may be beneficial to making sure all members of the community are heard and seen.

CLASSMATE POST:Hello everyone,
Bias involves preconceived notions or prejudices that can cloud our judgment. I can minimize bias and enhance my understanding of others by reflecting on my thoughts, being open-minded and empathetic, and actively exploring different viewpoints. Ongoing education about various cultures, social issues, and experiences is essential for reducing biases.
Early last year, I discussed with a friend the right age to leave a child alone for 2-3 hours. During this talk, I became frustrated by my friend’s views. Realizing this, I paused, took a deep breath, and collected my thoughts. I remembered that in Illinois, the legal age to leave a child alone for up to 24 hours is 14. At that time, my son was 13, and we were only talking about 2-3 hours, not a full day. After I researched the Illinois laws and shared the information with my friend, she apologized for her misunderstanding. If I had not taken the time to calm down and discuss this issue calmly, it might have ended our friendship.
Thank you,
Amy Wells
