General Points for Your Presentation and Outline

You have a topic and from that topic, you have chosen a message. The same message will be presented in oral format (via presentation) and written format (via outline).

It is important to engage your audience and create a conversational tone, rather than simply reading from a script.

Avoid starting your oral presentation with statements such as "My Title is..." or "My general purpose is...", but instead grab the audience's attention-set the tone for your presentation.

Establish yourself as an expert in the topic/message you have chosen. You need to do this both orally and in written format (outline).

When presenting orally, use transitions between sections, main points, and subpoints.

You are REQUIRED to include at least two visual aids. Used effectively and not props. Visual Aids should aid you in your presentation of your ORAL message. DO NOT include visual aids in your outline. Remember to present your visual aids to both virtual and in-person audiences.

When presenting, talk with your audience, and have a conversation by utilizing your Critical Listening Skills.

For virtual students, it is required that you remain on camera for the entire duration of the class. For on-site students, you will need to remain in class for the entire duration.

Please note that this is a non-negotiable assignment, and cannot be made up under any circumstances, except by the consent and request from the Dean.

Two common mistakes to avoid are not taking the assignment seriously and not properly preparing for your presentation (both oral and written). This is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about the topic, the speaker, and audiance.
