This is the final assignment for the Strategic Writing in Public Relations section. Public relations writers are often tasked with writing feature stories for print or online magazines and websites. This assignment gives you the opportunity to choose your own subject and infuse your own creativity and style in a longer-form story.
Criteria for success
- For this assignment you write about any topic you want. Choose a topic or interview subject that interests you and write your own feature story. You will submit your assignment via Turnitin for a plagiarism review so make sure your work is original. If you're having trouble coming up with an idea for a feature story, see the list of potential feature story topics embedded in the module.
- You must interview at least one person for your feature story. You can conduct your interview in person, via phone, email, text or other communications technology. Secondary sources are not allowed for this assignment.
- The quote(s) you cite in your story must be original and based on questions you ask your interview subject, either in-person or via phone, email or text. You cannot use secondary sources or quotes for this assignment.
- The word count is 400 (+/- 10%). Include it somewhere on your assignment.
- The strategy of the feature story is to entertain. Make sure you include your strategy somewhere on the page.
- You audience is faculty, students, staff.
- Your feature story must have a headline, lead, body, and conclusion.
- You want to show, not tell, your reader what's going on in your story.
- Use the same topic and lead paragraph from the previous assignment to begin your feature story (see textbook page 157) for the feature lead examples and descriptions.
- Before you submit your assignment, make sure you review the lecture videos and have someone review and revise your work. See the assignment rubric for specific criteria.
