CONS 3450J: Writing in Human and Consumer Sciences
RESEARCH PAPER Assignment
Please be aware that your research paper should be unique and original for this course. It is not acceptable to use a paper that you have previously written, nor is it acceptable to use the paper you are writing for CONS 3450J as work for any other course this term. Please check with the instructor if you have any questions about this
The Research Paper Assignment is essentially a comprehensive literature review. That is, you will not be required to conduct original research to report, but rather you will focus on compiling information about a specific topic, summarizing the research that has been published on the topic (or related to it), and then commenting on the relations, contradictions, gaps, or inconsistencies. Finally, you will make suggestions in your Research Paper regarding the “next steps” for solving the problem or further investigation of the topic. Your research paper must be submitted in APA format as described in the Manual and depicted on pages 41-59.
Give careful attention to the following required elements of your research paper:
- Determine a TITLE for your paper; your paper must have a title page
- Use a RUNNNING HEAD and number each page; for the DRAFT, put the word “DRAFT” prior to the running head.
- Write an abstract (the abstract should be the last thing written because it is a summary of the paper). Your DRAFT is not expected to have an abstract.
- Use headings throughout your paper. See the APA Manual, Section 3.02 and 3.03 (page 62) for information about headings.
- Cite work, in appropriate APA style, throughout the text of your paper. (use scholarly journals and the APA Manual to see examples).
- Include at least 8 substantive references/citations in your paper. The emphasis for references should be scholarly, peer-reviewed articles (5 of the 8 references must be peer-reviewed articles).
- Your paper should be approximately 1250-1750 words, excluding title page and references. Indicate “word count” on the title page.
