Overview
OVERVIEW: Examples of health communication are abundant in our media-saturated lives. For this assignment, students will select an example of a health communication text (a brochure, poster, checklist, flyer, clinic handout, meme, etc.) to analyze using the following standards: CDC Clear Communication User’s GuideLinks to an external site. and CDC Index Scoring Sheet.Links to an external site.
Using these guides, students will assess the health literacy level of the health text and provide suggestions for how the piece could be modified to improve its health literacy. This assignment simulates editorial decisions that need to be made in order to translate medical recommendations into everyday language for various target audiences in the population.
DETAILS: Submit a completed Index Scoring Sheet and a 2-3 page analysis summary in which you do the following:
- Briefly describe your chosen health communication text example.
- Identify where the example health text scores well on the CDC Index.
- Identify where the example health text falls short on the CDC Index.
- Describe why and how the failure(s) might adversely affect the target audience.
- Provide suggestions for how the piece could be modified to improve its health literacy scoring.
- Upload a copy of the health text example (or a link to it), a completed Index Scoring Sheet, and your written summary.
You may choose to submit the written analysis as a list of short answers to each prompt rather than in essay format. Whichever mode you choose, pay attention to the organization, formatting, and clarity of writing. Your written submission should be proofread to minimize grammar errors and typos.
