Project 4: Hominin Fossil Chronology

Phylogenetic Tree and Cladogram

For Project 4, please click on and download the attached three documents:

1) Part A: Phylogenetic Tree and Chronology TableActions

2) Timeline Blank 7.0mya.pdf

Actions

3) Part B: Cladogram and Chart of Shared Derived Traits

Actions

The Basic Idea:

You are budding paleoanthropologists, and you are trying to figure out how the different species of extinct hominins are related to one another, and related to us! You will need to first create a chronology of each species on a timeline based on when they lived. Then you will need to analyze their shared traits to see if you can figure out how they are related by constructing a cladogram of all of the species given. Lastly, you will combine this information on your phylogenetic tree to show how you think the species branch off from one another.

A. Hominin Phylogenetic Tree

INSTRUCTIONS

2. Be sure to hold the Timeline in a vertical orientation and begin in the lower left corner with Sahelanthropus tchadensis and proceed toward the right with each subsequent species, EXCEPT for the Paranthropus species, which will branch toward the left.

B. Hominin Cladogram

1. Now use the chart of shared, derived traits above to create a cladogram of hominin species. Be sure it is in INK and on blank, unlined paper, and include all species on the chart, along with all shared, derived traits in the right places.

2. Be sure to orient the page horizontally for the cladogram, and to begin with the common ancestor in the middle of the bottom of the page.

2. Lastly, return to your phylogenetic tree, and using the information from your cladogram, attempt to draw tentative (dashed) lines of relationship between the species in each bar. Make sure that dashed lines lead to the earliest examples of a species (bottom) and not the middle or end (top)

C. Submitting the Assignment

1. Take CLEAR photos of your phylogenetic tree and cladogram and upload them into the dropbox here. I can accept only JPG, PNG, or PDF files.

2. Project 4 is worth 30 points. Please consult the Rubric for this assignment to understand how it will be graded. I will grade based on both neatness and accuracy.

3. Due on Tuesday, May 13th by 11:59pm
