Debate Guidelines

Introduction: Competitive debate is a style of argumentation that combines the careful construction of arguments using appropriate research methodologies with effective persuasive delivery in order to convince an audience that your side is right. This assignment will deploy many of the concepts and theories that have been discussed in the course.

Assignment Requirements: Each Team is responsible for constructing 1 contention EACH in support of their side of the resolution they are given. These arguments must each be organized using the Narrative Toulmin Model – as shown below - and turned in on canvas on the day of the debate. Each team will also need to bring 3 Attack Arguments per member (see class discussion) and 3 cross-examination questions. Do not turn in your stuff as a group. Each debate brief must be tuned in seperately. The debate itself will follow the organizational pattern shown below and each student will be required to give one of the speeches listed. On the day of the debate you should have a printed copy of all your material.

Each student will be required to turn in one debate brief on Canvas on the day of their debate which contains the following:

- 1 Contention (See sample below)

- Each contention must be 1 – 2 pages in length with 3 sources in bold and 1 counter-argument in italics.

- 3 Attack Arguments (See sample below)

- 3 Questions.

- A works cited page in MLA format. An Easy place do this is on easybib.com.

Speech 3: Sample Contention

Contention 1: College athletes should be paid because they are working a full-time job. According to the National College Players Association on October 1, 2016, the average football player in the NCAA spends over 40 hours a week playing football. This is distributed between practice, games, travel, and any other activity these student athletes are required to attend. This does not include the amount of time these students need to spend in class, studying, doing homework, and free time to unwind and most importantly, rest. The fact that these student athletes are working 40 hours plus to get better at their sport and are not getting paid is ridiculous. Now some may say that they get paid through scholarships but according to an article on ESPN.com on September 15, 2016, not every player is guaranteed a scholarship and the scholarships that are given are often not enough to cover a student’s expenses meaning they may need to add a part-time job on top of their already heavy schedule. I have personal friends who have played division one sports and they have to practice seven days a week, and their schedule goes from an early morning lifting session starting at 5:30 all the way to a study session that ends at 9:30 at night. You add on top of this school, studying, practicing, playing, and possibly a part-time job. Again while some do get full ride scholarships this is not the case for many players across various athletics. And some of these supposed full-rides cover only tuition, and not the extra costs of school, like room and board, according the Cnn.com on November 10. 2015. For these athletes to be working 40+ hours is outrageous, dangerous, and unhealthy, and the deserve to be compensated with some form of salary to offset the costs accrued from this overwhelming workload. [TIME 1:20]

Sample Attack-Argument:

If they say legalizing marijuana will increase tax revenue for the state we will argue:

  1. It will not be that much tax revenue. While there are benefits to economic benefits to legalization, according to the Wall Street Journal’s economics blog on October 13, 2016 California’s existing expenses eat up large junks of new revenue streams so there is no guarantee that the money will go to programs likes schools and infrastructure.
  2. Potential benefits will be offset by new expenses that will occur because of legalization. According Marijuana Watch.com last accessed October 18, 2016, legalization causes expenses elsewhere. Increased usage increased driving while under the influence which causes accidents and medical bills that often then become the state’s financial burden. New revenue from legalization will be offset by the new bills the taxpayer will have to pay.
