Project 4: Hominin Fossil Chronology
Phylogenetic Tree and Cladogram
For Project 4, please click on and download the attached three documents:
1) Part A: Phylogenetic Tree and Chronology TableActions
2) Timeline Blank 7.0mya.pdfActions
3) Part B: Cladogram and Chart of Shared Derived TraitsActions
The Basic Idea:
You are budding paleoanthropologists, and you are trying to figure out how the different species of extinct hominins are related to one another, and related to us! You will need to first create a chronology of each species on a timeline based on when they lived. Then you will need to analyze their shared traits to see if you can figure out how they are related by constructing a cladogram of all of the species given. Lastly, you will combine this information on your phylogenetic tree to show how you think the species branch off from one another.
A. Hominin Phylogenetic Tree
INSTRUCTIONS
2. Be sure to hold the Timeline in a vertical orientation and begin in the lower left corner with Sahelanthropus tchadensis and proceed toward the right with each subsequent species, EXCEPT for the Paranthropus species, which will branch toward the left.
B. Hominin Cladogram
1. Now use the chart of shared, derived traits above to create a cladogram of hominin species. Be sure it is in INK and on blank, unlined paper, and include all species on the chart, along with all shared, derived traits in the right places.
2. Be sure to orient the page horizontally for the cladogram, and to begin with the common ancestor in the middle of the bottom of the page.
2. Lastly, return to your phylogenetic tree, and using the information from your cladogram, attempt to draw tentative (dashed) lines of relationship between the species in each bar. Make sure that dashed lines lead to the earliest examples of a species (bottom) and not the middle or end (top)
C. Submitting the Assignment
1. Take CLEAR photos of your phylogenetic tree and cladogram and upload them into the dropbox here. I can accept only JPG, PNG, or PDF files.
2. Project 4 is worth 30 points. Please consult the Rubric for this assignment to understand how it will be graded. I will grade based on both neatness and accuracy.
3. Due on Tuesday, May 13th by 11:59pm.
Rubric
Some Rubric
| Criteria | Ratings | Pts |
|---|---|---|
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomePhylogenetic Tree Neatness | 5 pts Full Marks Tree is drawn neatly using a ruler or computer, in ink, with 1cm wide colored bars for each genus. 3 ptsIntermediate Marks Some sloppiness, not done in ink. Bars are not 1cm wide. 0 ptsNo Marks Sloppily drawn, in pencil or poorly executed. | 5 pts |
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomePhylogenetic Tree Accuracy | 5 pts Full Marks One color per genus. One bar per each species. Accurately labeled and correctly placed toward the right. Paranthropus placed toward the left. 3 ptsIntermediate Labels missing. Slight problems with accuracy or placement. 0 ptsNo Marks Problems with color, placement, or accuracy. | 5 pts |
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomePhylogenetic Tree connections | 5 pts Full Marks Dashed lines connect between species based on cladogram. 3 ptsIntermediate Dashed lines are incorrectly placed. 0 ptsNo Marks No dashed line connections between species. | 5 pts |
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeCladogram Neatness | 5 pts Full Marks Cladogram is drawn in ink on blank paper and neatly done and labeled, using a ruler or computer. All species are placed at the top of the page. Most distant common ancestor is placed in the center bottom of the page. 3 ptsIntermediate Cladogram is somewhat sloppy and not done in ink. Species are not all at the top of the page. Most distant common ancestor is not placed in the center bottom of the page. 0 ptsNo Marks Sloppily drawn, in pencil, or poorly executed. On lined/scratch paper. | 5 pts |
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeCladogram Branch Accuracy | 5 pts Full Marks Cladogram is accurately drawn and labeled, with correct branches based on chart of derived traits. 3 ptsIntermediate Cladogram is mostly accurate, with some incorrect branches or traits placed incorrectly. 0 ptsNo Marks Cladogram has multiple inaccuracies with branches in incorrect positions. | 5 pts |
This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeCladogram Trait Accuracy | 5 pts Full Marks Common traits are correctly placed beneath common ancestors who have these traits. 3 ptsIntermediate Some problems with the placement of traits. 0 ptsNo Marks Common traits are mostly incorrectly placed. | 5 pts |
