Communications Question

Assignment Overview

This assignment gives you the opportunity to practice negotiating firsthand, analyze your actions (and that of your “opponent”) and reflect on what you could have done differently to achieve the same or different outcome. The purpose of the assignment is to apply what you have learned. As such, you may not write a negotiation that happened in the past or a hypothetical situation.

Assignment Description

Identify a person to negotiate with. Your negotiation could involve a good or service from a merchant, a salary or bonus with an employer, a discount from a service provider, a dispute with a landlord, or anything else.

Note: You do not have to buy anything to complete this assignment.

Similarly, your negotiations do not need to be successful. Failing, in this case, is fine. Often, we learn as much from negotiations that fail as we do from those that succeed.

Assignment Instructions

Step 1:

Identify a person to negotiate with and a specific situation over which to negotiate.

Note: You may not tell the person you are negotiating with that this is a class project until the negotiation is complete (and then you may decide whether you want to tell them).

You may not negotiate a deal that you do not intend to follow through with. Take this seriously. (And keep your word).

Step 2:

Conduct and conclude the negotiation.

Step 3:

After you have finished negotiating, you should write an analysis of the negotiation (minimally 2-3 paragraphs for each point, including:

  • A description of the subject of the negotiation e.g., purchasing or selling a good or service, a proposal, an offer of employment, or a dispute.
  • A description of what you did to prepare for the negotiation.
  • A description of how the concepts you learned in this module were reflected in the preparation and the negotiation.
  • A description of the outcome of the negotiation.
  • An analysis of your performance as a negotiator, including what you would do differently next time.

Assignment Tips

  • The emphasis should be on the application of negotiation principles and analysis rather than on a mere recounting of events.
  • The paper should be approximately 3-5 pages in Times New Roman, 12-point font.
  • Incorporate resources to support your analysis and apply NXU-style formatting and citations.
