Overview
To understand communication theories, it helps to know something about communication theorists. The purpose of this short assignment is for you to learn about the background of someone who has created a communication theory.
- Your paper should be one page in length. Papers that are more than one-third of a page too long or too short will receive a grade reduction.
- You do NOT need a title page or an abstract.
- You DO need a “References” section at the end of your paper that formats your references in correct APA 7th edition style. Your “References” section does not count toward your one-page limit.
- Your paper is to be typed using 12-point fonts and 1-inch margins and double-spaced throughout.
- Your paper must be in Word format (either .doc or .docx). PDF, Pages, and all other formats are unacceptable.
- Your paper is due by 11:59 pm on its assigned due date.

- Organize your paper into two sections:
A. Section 1 should introduce the theorist and describe his or her background. Where is he or she from originally? Where did he or she go to graduate school, and in what discipline? What faculty positions has the person held, and what is his or her current position?
B. Section 2 should introduce the theory that this person has developed. (If he or she has developed more than one theory, choose one on which to focus.) What is the theory about? When was it developed? What do you know about how the person developed the theory? How has the theory been used in the communication discipline?
- To research your theorist, it helps to begin with his or her university website. You can begin by Googling the person’s name and then finding a website about the person at the university where he or she works. You can also Google the person’s theory to find sources that will give you information about the theory. You may use Wikipedia to find basic information about the person (where he or she is from, where he or she works), but you need to use more credible sources for introducing and describing the person’s theory.
Evaluation: Your paper will be evaluated using these criteria:
1. Accurate details about the theorist and his or her background. (out of 10 points)
2. Accurate and thorough presentation of the person’s theory. (out of 10 points)
3. Clear, grammatically correct writing, effective word choice, and careful proofreading, including APA style. (out of 5 points)
