Culture Jam project

Overview

  1. CULTURE JAMMING ASSIGNMENT: (150) - Students will design a mock advertisement for a product of their choosing, based on a real ad/campaign. Your “culture jammed ad” should be completely an original creation, and should subvert a real ad (i.e. perfume, clothes, cars, and so forth). You can do an old fashion collage with glue, scissors, etc., or you can do a digital project. You must also create a side-by-side presentation (before and after) with the original ad and the culture jammed ad to present to the class.

After creating your culture jammed add, write a reflection (about 2 pages), which answers the questions bellow. You must also use 5 key terms and thoughts from the readings we have done thus far in order to show your understanding of concepts and your ability to apply them. You will present you add and reflection to the entire class. Answer the following questions in essay format, not questionnaire. Students will present their projects to the class.

  • Why did you choose this ad?
  • What were your intentions with subverting this campaign?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • How does your ad compare to traditional/conventional ads that have been created to sell this specific product?
  • What did you learn through the creation of this mock add?
  • What was the most difficult part about this project and why?
  • How does your mock add represent what you understand about gender/race/class identity, and the media?

Again, your report should be based on the theories and readings you have learned/done this semester.

  • Have fun!!
