Overview

FINAL PROJECT (100 points) Students will write an essay (3000 words) about an assigned theme or innovation in contemporary media.

This is an individual project. The theme of the paper is “Resisting the Attention Economy.” You can read ahead in your Odell textbook if you would like to explore areas that have not yet been covered in class at the time this project was assigned. Make sure to give enough time to complete the essay and proofread carefully before submitting. Monday, December 1– PRESENT FINAL PROJECTS

FINAL PAPER You are expected to write a 3,000 word paper in this class. This will account for 100 points (20%) of your final grade. The final paper is due on December 1, with an in-class presentation on that day. Pick a topic from the class readings (you can include topics in a chapter that we have not yet covered). A theoretical focus is required. You will be presenting your paper in class. All papers should be word processed, double-spaced, with titles and numbered pages. All references should be carefully cited according to a style guide such as APA (MLA or Turabian are acceptable with prior approval). It is assumed that all work submitted is the original work of the students whose names appear on it and is in your own words. I expect accurate, grammatical, well-written and well-organized submissions. Check your spelling and punctuation before handing in the essay. If you are a poor speller, spend the extra time and effort needed to get it right. Do not assume that spell-check software will solve all your problems. Do not plagiarize: it will not help your mind to develop at all, and if that's not sufficiently depressing, in addition, the college has severe penalties in force for academic dishonesty. You must have at least 10 sources. At least half must come from reputable scholarly journals. Wikipedia is not an acceptable source. The paper must include a separate work cited section with correct style citation (e.g. APA or another acceptable style).

PRESENTATION Please plan to make a presentation to the rest of the class. Hand-outs are encouraged. Be prepared to lead the discussion. Length of presentation including Q&A may not exceed 2 minutes. Please email me or come by during my office hours if you have questions. Good luck!
