Overview
Question:
Throughout this course, we’ve engaged with multiple perspectives on how rhetoric shapes the worlds we inhabit, both materially and imaginatively. We’ve explored how rhetoric structures and is structured by power, how rhetoric constructs and contests social realities that maintain collective identity, belonging, and exclusion, and how rhetoric can be used both to reinforce and resist hegemonic narratives.
Using 6 (at least) authors from the class, respond to the three-part question below:
1. Rhetoric as a Shaper of Reality:
- How does rhetoric shape the way we understand and experience the world? Consider how it influences our perception of truth, identity, and social order. How do different rhetorical strategies create or disrupt the reality we live in? Reflect on the role of rhetoric in constructing social, cultural, and political worlds, and consider how it can shape what is considered “real” or “true.”
2. Power and the Construction of Belonging:
- Reflect on how rhetoric works as a tool of power. How does it define who belongs in certain spaces, communities, or nations, and who is excluded or marginalized? Consider the ways in which competing rhetorical worlds challenge dominant power structures, and how these challenges reshape our understanding of identity and community. In what ways does rhetoric act as both an instrument of inclusion and exclusion?
3. Rhetoric as a Tool for Resistance and Transformation:
- Rhetoric is not only used to construct and maintain power; it is also a tool for resistance and transformation. Reflect on how rhetoric can be deployed to resist or reframe dominant narratives. How do alternative rhetorics or counter-narratives challenge the hegemonic discourses that shape our social and political realities? What role does rhetorical creativity play in challenging the status quo and envisioning more inclusive or equitable futures?
