What is your overall view of the Fadiman text and what two things stood out to you regarding social work and how they could have helped?
After viewing the two Ted Talks - Compassion Fatigue - why is this important for social work clinicians and ACES why is this info important for you to know about as a social worker or case manager? Should all people be tested for ACES?
Please answer and respond to at least one peer

The Fadiman text was incredible. The love of Foua and Neo Kao for their daughter was a testament to the greatness of Hmong culture. They persevered through their compassion fatigue to give an honorable life to their daughter who suffered from seizures that resulted in brain damage. Regarding social work, the first thing that stood out to me was the lack of cultural humility practiced with the family. I think that the case of Lia Lee educated her healthcare professionals to the reality of cultural humility, and how to better serve the Hmong community from the pitfalls of Lia's care. The practice of cultural humility could have helped procure a consistent medication schedule had a shaman called a txiv neeb been involved with the treatment of Lia be bridging the gap of mistrust and the misunderstandings of Lia's parents. The second things that stood out to me was there wasn't purposeful intake procedures occurring when Lia was beginning to receive care at Merced Community Medical Center. I would have taken extra care to develop a trustworthy relationship with Lia's parents with respect to their cultural beliefs.
The cultural fatigue video placed the importance of the self when offering care to others. The message I got from this video was that you can't pour into others from an empty vessel. The self has to be most important to heal others in a good way.
The adverse childhood experience study is important info to know as a social worker or case manager because it will help create an informed plan of treatment for the client. The rates at which cancer, mental illness, addiction, and other ailments occur in people with adverse childhood experiences is exponentially higher than the average person. ACES are applicable to a vast portion of the population. The information from being tested for ACES is fundamental to helping a client in their life who suffers from adverse childhood experiences.

Hello class,
the Fridman text showed a quick look at how social pressures shaped the way people act. It also shows that many of our choices aren’t just personal their influence by other groups, norms, and expectations that surround us. The explanation of expectations was helpful in thinking in my own behavior and how suicidal influences have shaped my own decisions. Compassion fatigue was something I found to be very interesting and I had never heard the phrase before. I believe it is a real thing that people face. I also believe that it is important for people to understand what aces is. Aces can help people understand decisions people make even themselves.
