Communications Question

Overview

How does culture influence your personal media consumption? (I mean you personally-- not a general you, meaning anyone.) Think about the movies, tv shows, podcasts, music, books, etc that you consume. Be specific and give examples. How do these shows/books/music/podcasts illustrate some of the concepts that we have read about this week? Make sure to refer to the readings (including the article you chose) in your response. How do issues of diversity and representation affect you as a consumer and as a citizen? What can/should be done to encourage more equitable representation in media? Do you agree with the requirements like the one proposed by the Oscars? These rules require films to meet two of four diversity standards to be eligible for a best-picture nomination. These guidelines were developed following the #OscarsSoWhite social media campaigns in 2015 and 2016 that drew attention to the lack of racial diversity among award nominees, as well as the protests about the 2020 murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis. These guidelines went into effect in 2024. Here is a link to check it out/ Representation and Inclusion Standards | Oscars.org | Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
