Overview
Choose a social, staged, cultural or everyday performance to write about analytically. It
can be a type of performance from any of the content we have covered in the class
(ritual, tradition, performance of identity, performance art, law, performance of
justice, etc.).
Using your performance worksheet exercises as a model, expand on an analysis of
your chosen performance practice. Be sure to not just describe the performance but
to articulate WHY such performances are done. Additionally, be sure to reflect deeply
on the IMPACT of this performance (beneficial and/or problematic) on society.
8-10 pages double-spaced, 1” margins, single line spacing.
Notes:
1) Use at least two of the concepts you have encountered in the class. Explain in detail
how these concepts are at work in your chosen performance.
2) Try to think beyond the most obvious explanations or interpretations of the
performance. Think about what is not obvious - this is your original insight or
perspective on the subject.
3) Offer citations of any information you offer in the paper. If you make a claim,
show where you got this info with a citation. When you arrive at a conclusion about
the impact of the performance, support your conclusion with citations of articles,
analyses, or reports that support your conclusion. MLA, Chicago, or APA style
citations allowed.
4) This is a research paper, so you should have an introduction, thesis or argument,
analysis (proving and demonstrating your thesis), and conclusion.
