- Chapter Five Discussion - Gun ControlDiscussion Topic Gun violence has been an ongoing problem in the United States with school shootings, mass attacks in public spaces, and even attempts on the lives of public figures. No matter where you stand on the issue, it’s clear that gun violence is not going away anytime soon. This week, I want you to look at the issue through the lens of a public policy. Start by thinking about the problem itself. How big is it? Who’s being affected, and what does the data show us about how often this happens? Then, get into why it’s happening. What are some of the root causes? Think about things like gun access, mental health, law enforcement, or other social and political factors that might be contributing. From there, consider the solutions that are already being proposed or debated. Do you think they’re actually going to solve the problem? If not, what else should we be looking at? Finally, share your own ideas. If you were advising lawmakers, what would you suggest? What do you think might actually work and why?Use what you’ve learned about how policies are created and evaluated to support your response, and feel free to bring in real-world examples or stories that have shaped your thinking.
- Chapter Five AssignmentAssignment [Image unavailable: Task: Submit to complete this assignment]I have read each of your orientation discussion posts, it seems some of you are in the criminal justice program while others are in the business program, nursing, hospitality and one student in human resources. Whether in your personal life or professional career, government is woven into almost everything that you'll do on a daily basis. So this week, let's pick a public problem you care most about because it impacts your life. Something real, something that affects you or your community. It can be anything from the employment for people with different abilities (my son has Down syndrome, so this is important to me), Raise the Age (juvenile justice), MAHA (health care and hospitality), food insecurity, and the list goes on and on. Then follow this structure for your assignment:
- Define the problem: what exactly is the issue? Get to the root of the problem and how we know it's a problem.
- Measure it: share at least one piece of data or a real-world example that helps illustrate the size or urgency of the problem.
- Analyze causes: what is driving the issue?
- Offer policy alternatives: think about what government can do like make new laws, create agency regulations, provide additional public funding or education, etc.
- Conclude with the choosing one policy solution that attempts to solve the problem and explain why you chose it.
The purpose of this assignment is to help you think through a public problem in a way a person working in an actual government office would. I would watch the news in the morning, read every single newspaper I could get my hands on and start thinking about creative ways to solve problems. Solutions that had not been thought of or proposed, with a combination of traditional solutions paired with new ways of thinking. I still do this today.
