Overview
For this assignment engage in a 10 minute conversation with someone and attempt to engage in convergence or divergence (you choose which you would like to do.)
REMEMBER, if you are trying to converge you should communicate with someone who speaks differently than you do. If you are trying to diverge, it would be helpful to communicate with someone who speaks in the same ways you do). For this assignment, you should focus on vocalics ONLY. Then answer the following questions in 3 to 4 paragraphs:
- Why did you choose this person for this assignment? Did you believe that converge or diverging would be difficult or easy? Why?
- Did you attempt to converge or diverge? How difficult was it to converge or diverge from your conversational partner? What specific vocal behaviors did you have to change (rate, pitch, etc). to converge or diverge?
- Did your partner notice that you were modifying the way you spoke? If yes, did he/she say anything to you? What did he/she say? What kind of impact do you believe your convergence/divergence have on the conversation?
