Assignment 1: The goal of this assignment is to provide the opportunity to evaluate the implementation of collaboration in a culturally diverse orchestra.
Case update: In 2020, musician and vocalist Rhiannon GiddensLinks to an external site. replaced famed cellist Yo-Yo MaLinks to an external site. as the artistic director of the Silk Road Ensemble, a shifting collective made up of dozens of musicians from Asian countries focused on playing music as eclectic as its membership.
"We all speak different languages ... [and] even if we both speak English, we speak a different cultural language, right? So you're always constantly trying to find, 'What is the common ground between you and me?' Silkroad is doing that [with] music."

After reading the Harvard Business Review case about Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, compose a 3-4 page APA style paper, synthesizing the readings and research from this and previous weeks, including at least one new credible resource from the Champlain LibraryLinks to an external site.. You can also use the library's Google Scholar search to find full articles in library databases and on the open web.
The case has several pages devoted to the financial aspects of the collaboration. You are not required to analyze these statements, however, success does appear in the financials. Reply in a succinct, informed manner to the following prompts:
- Describe your interpretation of the purpose and goal of the Silk Road Ensemble.
- What did you notice about the approach to cultural differences in this ensemble?
