Adapted from Armfield, G. G. (2017). Organizational Culture Analysis (modified)
For this paper, you will become an organizational culture detective as you will develop your ability to analyze organizational culture. This skill will benefit you when searching for internships during college or accepting any career position. Organizational employees are assimilated by organizational culture and persuaded to act, think and believe based on employers. Choose an organization (for profit or nonprofit) that you are familiar with or frequent. Typical organizations used for this assignment include restaurants, retail stores, charities, churches, or school groups. This assignment will develop your ability to connect real-world observations, findings, and theoretical application regarding organizational culture and assimilation.
Spend some time researching and observing an organization either in person or virtually. You could also conduct an interview or use online materials to supplement your analysis, such as the company website, news interviews and press releases, etc. Remember you are looking for artifacts, espoused values and basic underlying assumptions.
The elements of culture can help you better categorize information into Schein's model. Here are some optional questions you may consider for the assignment: Are there organizational heroes? What are the organizational rites and/or rituals? What organizational symbols reveal information about Schien’s three levels? What are the artifacts that are revealed? What are the espoused values? What are some core assumptions that organizational members hold?
Introduction
Briefly, describe the organization and provide relevant history of the organization you've chosen and what makes it interesting to you for this culture analysis.
Body
Present each of the three levels of Schein's model using 3-5 examples for each (3-5 artifacts, 3-5 espoused values and 3-5 underlying assumptions). What do the elements within each level say about the company.
Next, synthesize within by connecting a minimum of three expressions of culture to each category (heroes, rites and rituals, cultural network, practices, vocabulary, metaphors, stories, relevant constructs, etc.; Ch. 5). It's ok if these overlap some. For example, Sarah Tracy researches the use of humor in organizations. If a company has an espoused value of "work hard and laugh hard," I can relate that to practices or language and possibly describe a practice that embodies that value. The expressions of culture are the mechanisms through which we see culture in action, and are reinforced through artifacts, values, and assumptions. So think, for example, do they use a metaphor to convey a value or vice versa?
A. Artifacts
B. Espoused values
C. Assumptions
D. Identify any misalignments in the data you found or in practice if you have personal examples as a customer/client/employee, or make one practical suggestion the company could make to increase organizational communication effectiveness, from an organizational communication perspective.
Conclusion
Finish your paper by describing how using Schein’s theoretical model and the expressions of culture have helped you to understand organizational interactions and communication. Briefly, recap the main points of the paper and close your analysis by discussing what you learned from completing this assignment and reflect on what you understand that you did not prior to completing this assignment.
