Overview
Discussion 5A: The Industry LandscapeAs the strategic communication industry has shifted to match today's media landscape, the boundaries between different promotional disciplines have blurred and new categories of promotional work like data management have emerged. Today's marketing or advertising firm looks very different from the ones from the golden age of advertising.
See the attached file for a copy of the annual "Marketing Technology Landscape" infographic that a popular marketing/tech blog puts out each year. This version is from April 2020 and there are over 8,000 companies listed (don't worry, you're not supposed to be able to read it). And this is just companies that advertise themselves as being technology driven solutions.
For this assignment, I want you to draw on the work-based learning module to find a listing for a real internship at a strategic communications company (I suggest a search search on Indeed or LinkedIn). This does not have to be an internship that you would actually apply for (i.e. it can be in a location you couldn't work in or during a time period when you have other commitments), the goal is just to practice searching for and reading listings in order to identify a company to research further. SCREENSHOT the listing so you can attach it to your assignment in case it gets taken down.
Go to the website for the company that posted the listing and explore it to learn more about what they do, who their clients are, and any other information that would be helpful to you as a hypothetical internship applicant.
Then, please write 250-300 words (note this is longer than your other discussion posts) answering both of the following questions:
- How did you draw on the principles and competencies of work-based learning while finding the internship listing and visiting the company's website?
- Based on the website, which of the traditional functions of an advertising agency identified in the Macrury reading does this company serve? Which things that it does fit more into the emerging functions? Does it fit into the all-in-one archetype or is it one of the specific subtypes?
- Include a link to the website and and your screenshot of the internship posting to your post.
