Overview
This assignment is designed to assess your ability to effectively understand and apply a counseling theory during a mock counseling session. You will be evaluated on your use of therapeutic techniques, client-centered approach, professional communication, ethical considerations, and reflection on the session.
Instructions- Select a Counseling Theory: Choose a counseling theory you have studied that you feel confident in applying during a session. Examples include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, etc.
- Prepare for the Session:
- Review the core principles, techniques, and interventions associated with your chosen theory.
- Consider how you will integrate these elements into your session to address a client's needs effectively.
- Conduct the Mock Video Session:
- Duration: The session should last between 15-20 minutes.
- Role Play: You will role-play as the counselor, with a peer/volunteer acting as the client. Briefly describe your scenario/vingette and student (i.e. middle school student with severe test anxiety).
- Techniques & Client-Centered Approach: Utilize appropriate therapeutic techniques derived from the theory while maintaining a strong, empathetic connection with the client. Adapt your approach as necessary to meet the client’s needs.
- Professional Communication: Ensure that your communication is clear, effective, and sensitive. Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the session.
- Ethical Considerations: Be mindful of ethical principles relevant to counseling, such as confidentiality, respect, and avoiding harm.
- Record the Session:
- Ensure that the entire session is recorded. Make sure the video quality is sufficient for evaluation, with clear audio and visuals.
- Options: Any media recording device is acceptable, however, Kaltura is preferred since captions are automatically enabled.
- (Kaltura User Guide for Students [PDF])
- Self-Reflection: After completing the session, record or write a brief reflection (1-2 pages) on your performance. Consider the following:
- How well did you apply the counseling theory?
- Were there any challenges in maintaining a client-centered approach or using specific techniques?
- How did you handle ethical considerations?
- What would you do differently in a real counseling session?
- If this student is part of a historically underrepresented and under-supported group in society, explain what considerations you would need to make to provide equitable access to support. Otherwise, explain how you would alter your approach/support if the student were a part of an underrepresented group.
- What do you see as the biggest challenge in supporting students in your school setting? Explain.
- In what ways does your positionality as a counselor and your own personal/cultural/socio-economic background enable you to advocate for equity in your school setting? In what ways is that same positionality and life experience a challenge in advocating for equity?
