Flash card

Why make a flashcard?

Making your own flashcards can help you remember information because you use elaborative rehearsal as you decide what information to include on your flashcard. We will learn more about elaborative rehearsal in Unit 2. Meanwhile, see if making a flashcard helps you remember the definition of Psychology presented in the section 0.5.

What to do:

  1. Write the word "Psychology" on a 3x5 index card (or any 3x5 piece of paper). Then, on the other side of the card or paper, write the definition of the term.
  2. Underneath the definition write/draw/sketch at least three things that elaborate on the textbook definition. These could include
    • rephrasing the definition in your own words
    • a question, or confusion that you have about the term
    • a connection you have made to something that you have already learned
    • a picture or sketch that might help you remember the definition
  3. Submit a picture of your flashcard (just the side with the definition and three elaborations), or type into the submissions what you wrote on the flashcard (describe in words any sketches or drawings)

Why do I need to write it down?

Research suggests that writing down information is more effective than simply saying it or typing it. Try it and see if it works for you! If this study technique is useful, you have just made the first flashcard for this course!

Note: See how the assignment uses information from the previous Canvas page (0.5)? Yep. If you read the page, including the link to the textbook, you should have the info you need for this assignment.

Grading policies

  • Your assignment will be graded using the criteria listed in the rubric (see below) for this assignment. I will assign points and make comments in the rubric. Make sure to check the rubric for comments if you are planning to revise and resubmit.
  • If you submit your assignment by the due date, it will be graded in 2-3 days. If there are corrections or additions that you wish to make you may do so as long as you resubmit by the day of the Unit test.
  • Making a submission that is substantially copied from an outside source without acknowledging the source is plagiarism. This is a violation of the student code of conduct. You will receive a zero for the assignment and may face other consequences, depending on the severity of the violation. The syllabus describes in detail the consequences for plagiarism.
  • If you are not able to submit the assignment by the due date, please include an explanation and documentation of your excuse in the comments section when you submit. If your reason for being late is valid, you will get full credit for the assignment as long as it is submitted by the day of the Unit test.
  • Any submissions after the date of the Unit test will not be accepted for credit.
