Overview
DISCUSSION 1: Understanding Communication Competence In Real Life -DISCUSSION 1: UNDERSTANDING COMMUNICATION COMPETENCE IN REAL LIFE
Let's talk about it. After watching this week's video lecture 4 ("Principles of Interpersonal Communication") and video lecture 5 ("Communication Competence"), you will complete this discussion board assignment. You will reflect on the prompt and offer your honest response. Your response should begin with re-writing (copy and paste) the question and then following with your response. Your initial response for each prompt should contain 7-15 sentences (yes, I do count), be written in full, complete sentences appropriate for the college classroom, be free of, or have limited errors in grammar and syntax. Your response should also provide an explanation of why you hold this position and an example to support your position.
After sharing your own response, you will then reply to four (4) classmates. You will respond thoughtfully to four (4) peers. Your response to your classmates should be thoughtful and say more than "I agree", "That happened to me to", "That's cool", and "I disagree". Your reply should be 5-10 sentences.
This assignment is worth 100 points. Each discussion prompt is worth 30 points. Your response to your peers is worth 10 points each.
- 60 points -- responding clearly to the prompt with a position, reason, and example; 5 points --limited/no errors; following the formatting guidelines
- 40 points -- replying to your classmates with a thoughtful reply

ASSIGNMENT
Purpose: This assignment asks you to explore communication competence by examining how effectiveness and appropriateness do not always happen at the same time. Using real-life interpersonal interactions, you will analyze how communication principles and competence show up in everyday interactions and relationships.
During this module, we've been talking about competence. And here's something to consider: "Something can be effective but inappropriate; and, something can be appropriate but ineffective." This will be the anchoring idea on which you will write your reflection.
DISCUSSION PROMPT
Something can be effective but inappropriate. Something can be appropriate but ineffective. Which matters more to you in your relationships — effectiveness or appropriateness? Why?
