Communications Question

Overview

1. In group development, communication plays an important role at every stage. During the forming stage, it is important to ensure clarity, so all members understand the goals and expectations. In the storming stage, communication should focus on respect, empathy, and allowing each member the opportunity to express their opinions. As for norming, clarity and active listening are essential to ensure everyone understands their roles. Across all stages, effective communication includes active listening, clear information sharing, and mutual respect so that every member feels heard.

A quality of leadership is adaptability. Strong leaders should be able to recognize the different personalities and learning styles of the members in their group and adjust their communication style if they require different approaches.

Some challenges groups face such are mixed personalities, cultural differences, lack of participation, and miscommunication. To overcome these challenges, communication should remain task-focused, respectful of different perspectives, and supported by clear expectations and boundaries from the beginning. Consistent reiterating information helps to ensure that all members of the group have the same understanding of the tasks/goals. In my personal experience, being in the military is the biggest group I’ve joined. Our everyday tasks require teamwork, and it has shown me the importance of communication and good leadership. Whether completing mechanical tasks or operating equipment, our own success depends on all of us working together effectively.

2. When groups form, communication is important at every stage. During the forming stage, members should introduce themselves and share expectations. In the storming stage, people should communicate respectfully when disagreements happen. During norming, groups should establish goals and roles. In the performing stage, communication should focus on teamwork and completing tasks efficiently. Leaders should adapt their communication based on the group they are leading. Some groups need more direction, while others work better with more independence. Good leaders stay flexible, listen to feedback, and communicate clearly. Three common group challenges are poor communication, conflict, and unequal participation. These can be addressed through regular communication, respectful conflict resolution, and assigning clear responsibilities to each member.

I recently benefited from working in a group while playing a team-based video game. My teammates and I communicated throughout the match, shared responsibilities, and worked together to achieve our objective. We performed much better as a team than we would have individually.
